Dove Launches #LoveYourCurls Book To Celebrate Curly Girls

dove-love-your-curls-book-cover So ever since my friends over at Dove sent me information about their latest #LoveYourCurls campaign, I've been absolutely obsessed with it. It all started with this super cute video with young girls giving their opinions about their curly hair: It's a fact. Growing up, curls were the least-desired style. Everybody who was cool or considered beautiful had straight hair. It's the reason I felt prettier with straight hair and not so pretty when my curly roots would start to show when it was time for a relaxer. It's the same reason I started LoveBrownSugar - to share my style journey, which largely included my hair struggle and embracing my natural curls.

dove-love-your-curls-poems Inspired by this journey as well as the many young women who should have the privilege of growing up in a society that is way more accepting of natural curls, Dove has released a new Love Your Curls Book penned by bestselling author Taiye Selasi. love-your-curls-illustration The book, featuring illustrations by Annick Poirer, is a poetic tribute to curly hair inspired by the thousands of stories, photos and messages from women with curly hair that poured in as a result of the campaign. I had a chance to catch up with the author Taiye Selasi to ask her a few questions about her involvement with the book. See our Q&A below: Taiye_Selasi BabyBrownSugar: What inspired you to write the book? Taiye Selasi: Dove Hair’s research findings—that only 10% of women in the US with curly hair feel proud of their hair, and only 4 in 10 little girls with curly hair think their hair is beautiful—were extremely touching. I grew up as one of those 4 in 10, a young girl who felt that her hair was not seen as beautiful by society. When Dove Hair asked me to be a part of the Love Your Curls mission, by turning the thousands of stories from real women that poured in as a result of the campaign into a book of poems, I was honored. It's been an absolute pleasure to partner with Dove Hair to inspire future generations of curly girls. How did you channel your personal experience into the poems for the book? What was really unique and exciting about this project is that I was able to use real women’s stories, photos and messages as direct inspiration for the poems in the book. It was beyond touching to hear all of their personal “curly” journeys, and amazing how much of myself I saw in each of them. When did you finally grow to accept and love your curls? You know, it's funny. When I went off to college, the natural hair renaissance in the States was just getting underway. In those years I learned to love, and above all, to care for my Afro. But it's an ongoing journey. When I began writing this book of poems, I had occasion to revisit my relationship with my hair. Inspired by the real women who submitted their stories to Dove Hair, I decided to try something new. I cut my hair and began exploring new ways to wear my natural curls. In writing these poems, I was reminded not only that curly hair is beautiful—but, very poignantly, that beauty comes from within. I received my copy of the #LoveYourCurls Book at the Mom 2.0 Summit in Scottsdale and immediately fell in love with the cover art, and also with the stories and poems within. dove-love-your-curls Though I received a hard copy, the book is actually available digitally as well and it's FREE to download and also to personalize for a curly girl in your life.
